Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in the village of Mvezo in Umtata, then part of South Africa’s Cape Province. On 10 May 1994, Nelson Mandela, an anti-apartheid activist, leader of uMkhonto we Sizwe, lawyer, and former political prisoner, was elected President of South Africa, and ruled till 14 June 1999. Nelson Mandela was a boxer and long-distance runner in his college days. When he became a political prisoner, he helped to organize prison sports leagues and was said to be a fan of the prison soccer matches. As president, Mandela used sports to unite the deeply divided country.He was a good writer and speaker, so he could unite people of his country for fight against apartheid in south Africa. He was a strong fighter and hero of the civil rights and martyr who claimed victory to establish a non-racial democracy for South Africa. He had charismatic and beaming personality. He went on lecture tours to run for public office frequently.
He was arrested as a political prisoner on August 5, 1962 and spent 27 years in prison, to be released on February 11, 1990. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and became the Africa’s first President of colour on May 2, 1994 and served as his nation’s president until June 1999. He attended the University of Witwatersrand where he qualified in law in the year 1942.He protested against the apartheid policies [discrimination on basis of race] of the ruling National Party. After his release on February 11, 1990, he continued his life’s work to banish apartheid policies. In 1991, he was elected President of the African National Congress, the presidency of his country in 1994. Nelson Mandela passed away on a Thursday at the age of 95 on 8th December 2013.
Mr Mandela was married thrice. He had six children, four daughters and two sons. In 1944 he married to Evelyn Ntoko Mase and divorced her on 19 March 1958. On14 June 1958 he married Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela and divorced her on 19 March 1996. On 18 July 1998 he Married Graça Machel and she remained his wife till his death. He reproduced 4 children with first wife in 1945, 1948, 1950, 1954. With Winnie Mandela he had 2 children born in 1959 and 1960. On 5 December 2013, Nelson Mandela, died at the age of 95 after a prolonged respiratory tract infection.
