His full name was Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata. He took birth on 29 July 1904 in Paris. He was an Indian aviator, industrialist, entrepreneur and chairman of Tata Group. He was second child of noted businessman Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and his wife Suzanne Brière. Tata was educated in London, Japan, France and India. He was a multilingual. He worked in French army for some duration. In 1929, Tata renounced his French citizenship and became an Indian citizen. In 1930 Tata married Thelma Vicaji. It was a love marriage. They had no children. JRD Tata adopted Ratan Tata as a son from a relative of his. In 1991, JRD Tata, who had led the Tata group for over half a century, appointed Ratan Tata to be his successor.
In 1929, J.R.D.Tata became the first licensed Indian pilot. He is also best known for being the founder of several industries under the Tata Group, including Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, Titan Industries, Tata Salt, Voltas and Air India.Tata cared greatly for his workers. In 1983, he was awarded the French Legion of Honour and in 1955 and 1992, he received two of India’s highest civilian awards the Padma Vibhushan and the Bharat Ratna. These honours were bestowed on him for his contributions to Indian industry. J.R.D. Tata died in Geneva, Switzerland due to a kidney infection on 29 November 1993, aged 89.
