Satyajit Ray was born on May 2, 1921, in an intellectual and affluent family in Calcutta, India. He lost his father in 1923. His father, Late Sukumar Ray was an eminent poet and writer in the history of Bengali literature. Satyajit Ray got married in 1949 to Bijoya Ray. He had one son born on 8th September 1953.
He received his degree in science and economics from Calcutta University. Then Satyajit Ray attended Tagore’s Viswa-Bharati University. His first movie Pather Panchali (1955) won several International Awards and set Ray as a world-class director. In 1947, Ray established the Calcutta Film Society. During a six month trip to Europe in 1950, he managed to see 100 films.
In 1955, he faced incredible financial hardship (shooting on the film Pather Panchali stopped for over a year). This film won many awards abroad including Best Human Document at Cannes. After this his film career started. He directed 36 films, comprising of features, documentaries and short stories.
He had heart attack during the making of Ghare-Baire (1984). In 1992, Ray’s health deteriorated further due to heart complications. He was admitted to a hospital but never recovered. Twenty-four days before his death, Ray was presented with an Honorary Academy Award by Audrey Hepburn via video-link. He was a good poet, writer, composer and best film director. Satyajit Ray received the highest civilian award in India, Bharat Ratna, in 1992.
He had been the recipient of all the Padma awards and Dada Saheb Phalke awards prior to that. Satyajit received Legion d’honneur, the highest French order of merit (both military and civilian), in the year 1987. Ray won 21 awards for his direction. In addition to directing, Ray was a music composer and also wrote the screenplay, lyrics, and dialogues for several films. He died on 23 April 1992, 9 days before his 71st birthday.
